BURNLEY slipped to their first defeat of the new season at Glanford Park.

The Clarets largely dominated the opening 25 minutes, but failed to turn their possession into chances, and ultimately goals.

Two goals in the first 20 minutes of the second half from Martin Paterson and Jim Goodwin settled matters, to give the Iron their first victory since promotion.

Burnley made nine changes to the side that defeated Grimsby Town on penalties on Tuesday night.

Gabor Kiraly returned in goal, while only Stephen Jordan and Michael Duff retained their place from the Carling Cup tie.

There was a debut for Clarke Carlisle following his midweek move from Watford, while David Unsworth made his league debut at centre back.
