Steven Thompson started his career at Dundee United in 1996, scoring 18 goals in 133 appearances. Whilst at The Terrors he gained his first Scotland cap against France in March 2002.

Thompson then moved to Rangers for £200,000, scoring on his debut against Dundee, he then moved onto Cardiff City in January 2006 for £250,000 once again scoring on his debut, against Burnley.

He made 97 appearances for Cardiff, scoring 16 goals. But he was placed on the transfer list and stayed on it until his transfer to Burnley on September 1st 2008, making his debut in a 2-1 win against Nottingham Forest.
